Brooklyn’s Finest: The Greene Family Farm

On many weekends six-year-old Akousa and eleven-year-old Booker Taliaferro Washing
ton Greene and their parents are surrounded by dirt, fertilizer, vegetables and fruit. The Greene Family runs an organic farm in the heart of the Brownsville’s section of Brooklyn. The Greene Family Farm grows some of the sweetest watermelons and strawberries in the country. Realizing they live in a food desert the Greene’s opened their doors 3 years ago to sell fresh fruits and vegetables to the community.
The family sells zucchini, cucumbers, kale, broccoli, lettuce, and a bunch of other fruits. When it gets cold outside the farm’s business slows down. The farm harvests a few things like onions, peas and radishes over the winter. Much of the Greene’s business focuses on selling fruit and vegetables to farmer’s markets in Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens and the Bronx.
